Is sea salt good for the skin?

Vision Products – better natural skin care

Have you ever wondered why our ancestors recommended a swim in the sea at least once a week? It was because seawater is rich in minerals like magnesium that our bodies can easily absorb through our skin during sea frolicking, making us feel relaxed. Sea bathing has positive effects on our health, body and mind, while delivering benefits to the skin.

According to NCBI, "Saltwater baths are a non-invasive, low-cost, effective treatment that significantly reduces bathing pain, pain medication use, and some signs of skin infection.”

The history of seawater bathing in Scarborough, England, dates back to the 17th century when Dr Robert Wittie recommended sea bathing for a wide range of ailments, according to Eric Chaline whose book is titled Strokes of Genius: A History of Swimming.

There are around 47 minerals found in seawater, as advised by Stanford University. “Whenever rain falls on the mountains, it breaks up rocks into minerals, salts and sediments. These minerals are transported to the ocean through river water. All over the world, rivers carry around 4 billion tons of dissolved salts to the ocean annually,” according to the National Ocean Service, USA

Like seawater, sea salt is also rich in minerals as it is obtained by evaporating seawater with minimal processing. Sea salt retains these high traces of minerals due to two natural processes-sun evaporation and wind drying. Vision Products uses a local New Zealand sea salt sourced from the clear waters of the great southern oceans containing minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium, sulfur and others.

Natural skin care routine with sea salt

Natural sea salt contains higher traces of minerals than regular table salt, and therefore, it is believed that taking a bath with sea salt in the water can make skin healthy. For example Dr. Sapna Palep  a board-certified Dermatologists recommends sea salt baths for patients with psoriasis, eczema, and other dry skin conditions. Therefore, sea salt can make a valuable contribution to any natural skincare regime. See our Balance System as an example of how we incorporate our Sea Salt Exfoliant into a facial skin care system.

Sea salt has the quality of detoxifying skin by pulling out dirt, impurities, and dead skin and therefore is used as an excellent exfoliant.

“The exfoliation offered by a skin scrub with finely granulated minerals can help clear out dead skin and prompt cell turnover, it can help detoxifying the body and cleaning the pores, while also leaving the skin smooth to the touch,” according to medical esthetician Holly Cutler.

Healthy skin has the right balance of all necessary oils and nutrients. In order to keep that balance, it is important to exfoliate twice a week to remove dead skin and replenish the skin with natural ingredients that are known to condition and rejuvenate the skin.

Sea salt also has antibacterial properties that help heal wounds, cuts, skin irritations, and sores. It also reduces swelling due to acne, scars, or freckles.

Natural exfoliant vs chemical-based exfoliant

It is easy to be taken in by the flashy packaging of popular brands and buy some chemical-based exfoliant, but they are neither good to our health, nor to our environment. Synthetic chemical-based exfoliants can contain harmful ingredients like Salicylic Acid and colour pigments.

“Although salicylic acid is considered safe, it may cause skin irritation. It may also remove too much oil, resulting in dryness and potential irritation. Its other side effects are skin stinging, itching, peeling skin and hives.” as per Healthline

Although colour pigments, used in cosmetics to give them colour, may be approved by the FoodDrug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), they are basically petroleum-derived substances. According to Healthline “The safety of these dyes is highly controversial” and hence there use may not be that great for our health.

Natural skin care products are beneficial to our skin, overall health, and the environment. For example, Vision Products’ sea salt exfoliant has an all-natural formulation of beneficial skin care ingredients with added oils that make our skin soft and supple and naturally beautiful.

New Zealand sea salt can be used as a skin cleanser, exfoliant or a scrub. Its coarseness can be easily changed by adding water to it. It not only helps in removing dead or hardened skin, but also stops bacterial growth and improves blood circulation to add a natural vitality to the skin.

Use Vision Products sea salt exfoliant as the autum months arrive. It removes hardened, tanned skin cells to make a way for fresh skin to shine through. It is also great for easing the signs of scar tissue and giving the skin a more alive feeling.
