Biospherically Correct Info
Do the ingredients in the product meet the criteria for being 'green ingredients', that is, organic and/or natural, high yielding and sustainable?Biospherically Correct
It is vital to use hair care products that are made with natural, plant based ingredients and preservatives. To this end, our products do not contain parabens, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), artificial fragrances or colours. They utilise plant derived cleansers sourced from renewable raw materials and are much kinder on your hair and scalp, while helping to keep our water ways cleaner.
All of our other ingredients have been chosen for their hair health enhancing functions and plant based sustainablity. (Disclosure: one ingredient - the conditioning base used in our two conditioners contains greater than 70% of natural materials and has a small unquantifiable amount of palm oil, sourced from a supplier who is committed to a sustainable palm oil industry and is a member of the Round Table for Sustainable Production of Palm (RSPO) )
Many of the flowers and leaves used in the recipes grow organically in our supplier's own garden. The main preservative that we use is derived from the Styrax tree and is known for its anti oxidant and antiseptic properties, making it an ideal natural preservative. Another preservative that we use is corn based and has been chosen for its known moisturising effect as well as for its preservative qualities.
Summary: We are proud that our shampoos and styling products are 100% natural, while our conditioners are virtually 100% natural.
To what extent does the cultivation and extraction of the raw materials necessary to produce this product enhance the diversity of life, that is, aids the greater biospheric services of the planet, the localised eco systems (species and habitat protection) and preserves the associated knowledge, customs and prosperity of the indigenous cultures of the territoryBiospherically Correct
We are proud to say that we have worked hard to create hair care formulas that are palm oil free*. Palm oil is ubiquitous in hair products, and as such is contributing to the extinction of species (including the orang-outang) along with vast acres of native forest.
*Disclosure: There is an unavoidable trace of palm oil in the conditioning emulsifier - one of the conditioner ingredients. This ingredient however, is supplied by a company who is a member of the Round Table for Sustainable Production of Palm (RSPO)
We do not use harsh petrochemical-derived surfactants (detergents). Our plant based cleansers are biodegradable and so when entering our water ways produce less bioconcentration - the up take of water-born chemicals by fish and other aquatic organisms.
In regards to preserving valuable "associated knowledge" we support the practice of people working 'hands on' with the flora and fauna of the land- keeping botanical knowledge and connection alive. Many of the flowers and leaves used in the hair formulations are grown naturally by our suppliers, who then carefully hand craft these precious ingredients from nature into the finished product.
Summary: With our hair care, it's all about what is not in our products that makes them bio-diversity friendly. Not tested on animals.
How well do the processes inherent in the manufacturing, packaging and distribution of this product sustain nature?Biospherically Correct
The manufacturing of our hair care is done especially for us by an environmentally conscious boutique company in New Zealand who uses solar power & other carbon neutral heating methods from sustainable sources. Zero water discharge is achieved with an onsite waste management plant, all paper packaging is re used while glass and plastic is recycled and organic waste composted.
Packaging- At Vision Products we have developed a reuse/refill/recycle system as part of a 'cradle to cradle' philosophy. We have choosen to use these materials in various combinations for specfic reasons for greater bio-intergration of materials:
Glass: For its excellent barrier and recycling ability. Products in glass bottles come in a refill option and some glass jars can be refilled. Polypropylene plastic:(PP) is bisphenol free, intended to be refilled several times from bulk 750ml PLA bottle before being recycled. Polylactic acid plastic: (PLA) is renewable, biodegradable cornstarch which breaks down into organic matter. Envirosense: All of our self adhesive labels conform to industrial and home composting situations providing a conscious consumer with greater choices about disposal. On the PLA bottle these labels create a unified composting/recycable unit. Cardboard tags: Made from eco papers and printed with soy inks, mostly from offcut material, meaning less pre consumer waste.
Summary: Excellent manufacturing & eco packaging systems are in place, however transportation/logistical issues are lacking due to the reliance on fossil fuels. We look forward to helping create such improvement in the future.
How positive for the individual, society and the environment is the function of the product in its final form?Biospherically Correct
The packaging of these products is limited to a minimum while also ensuring an element of style is maintained. The words love, forgiveness, compassion, tolerance and integrity are meaningfully printed on our labels to inspire and promote a sense of connection with others. We use PLA, a plant based plastic for our containers as part of our refill/recycle system.(see Eco Processes).
What is important to us, is that our products in their final form, function as effective and healthy cleansers for the hair and skin but when washed away help preserve the health of our environment. Vision's hair care range is based on naturalness and high biodegradability. For our personal well-being it is vital that the ingredients which are applied to the hair, and ultimately absorbed into the skin and body are non toxic.
Due to the more environmentally compatible plant based surfectants used in our hair care, they function in a more environmentally friendly manner in regards to the residue which drains away into our water ways. Free of commonly used detergents and preservatives such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and parabens which accumulate in the environment and have been linked to serious health problems. Bioconcentration (see Diversity Protection) effects the quality of our fish stocks and marine health in general.
Summary: We have created a high level of bio-integration by combining plant based ingredients for the hair and skin, in a plant based bottle, resulting in a product that is healthy for people as well our waterways.
